I don’t see pop-ups, just forgotten Graves

Iam a member of FaG as a volunteer to take photos for grave markers of strangers lovedones who do not live in this area. How it works is ,I get emails from Find aGrave telling me there is a request for a photo from someone ,and it tells methe graveyard and name they are looking for. Should I choose to fulfill thatrequest, I go in and claim it, travel to that graveyard, walk the entire yarduntil I find that persons grave marker. Then I take a photo and email itthrew FaG to the memorial sat up for that person.
Why do I do this?

You may find this a strange hobby, but I love it. After doing Genealogy now for the last twenty years, I started doingthis first for my family tree and then decided I would give it a try as avolunteer. You don't get paid for this with money, but it is very rewarding.That's all it took, I was hooked. Anytime I go to a town I am visiting , I lookup to see what graveyards are in that town and see if there are requests madethat no one has claimed. Its that easy!
You will be surprised how many graveyards that are not being taken care of andhow many forgotten graves of someone's loved ones that aren't being taken careof. I hope when I and my husband are gone that someone will care enough to keepour headstone clean or the weeds from growing around us. I see broken markersand many lying on the ground where they were knocked over. I have seen gravesthat are really cluttered with old flowers or trinkets that are left by peopleand piling up like a garage sale. Those graves need to be cleaned up now andthen, store away the oldest trinkets, maybe leaving two or three. And I alsosee where a grave may have been there for about two or three months, and nobodywent back and decluttered the dead arrangements and wire stands left from thefuneral. I have seen some that had mail boxes for notes, Fire pits, chairs andtables as if they have people sit around all day. I have seen very large,beautiful, gravestones. I've seen rocks as markers, wood signs, or metal.Those make you think about how their loved one maybe couldn’t afforda headstone, but they cared to mark the grave the best way they could. I seemany where the headstones are there with only names and Birthdates. Those arethe ones you know are in waiting for the day that person will die. That is whatmy husband and I are doing. We are designing our stone now to be placed on ourplots so all our children have to do is have the grave death dates.
Doing this for people I have never met and will never meet in my lifetime hasreally been awarding in itself. I get some really nice post from people I havefulfilled their request. I know when someone fills one for me that I can’ttravel to, I feel so appreciative of the time they took to walk around lookingfor my love one. This is also a great way for birth dates, death dates, maidennames, and marriage dates to be updated on someone's genealogy. There really isso much a Headstone tells about a person. Some show scenes of that person’shobby, what they did for a living, or a photo of the person who lies there.
The saddest is how many children have died. You know where they are thou. Theywere never accountable for a sinful life. They are innocent, little angels thatGod had a plan for early in their life.
This is not a scary hobby! I haven't seen any pop-ups yet! I only feel thepeople saying thank you for visiting me today!

To me, doing genealogy is not a cold gathering of facts but,instead, breathing life into all those who have gone before. We are thestorytellers of the tribe. All tribes have one. We have been called, as itwere, by our genes. Those who have gone before cry out to us: Tell our story.

Benjamin Solomon Newman

Benjamin Solomon Newman was born in the northeastern part of Franklin County, Mississippi, probably in the general area of the Solomon Newman Plantation Home. Later, when his father, Samuel M. Newman, acquired a farm in Section 3, T7N, R3E, which bordered Middle Fork Creek at the Jefferson County Line, it was here that he spent his years growing into manhood.
According to family accounts, it was during his teenage years that Ben Newman suffered an accident which left him crippled in his left knee for the balance of his lifetime. Accounts indicate that he was working on his father’s farm on a particular day, chopping wood with an axe, when somehow the axe, striking a glancing blow, then hit Ben in the area of his left knee. It caused a terrible wound and resulted in the loss of a considerable amount of blood. After the wound had healed, the knee could no longer flex properly, and Ben also suffered an antipathy to the sight of blood. Consequently, his ambition which he had held to study medicine and become a physician, was then lost. Furthermore, at the beginning of the American Civil War when the young men of the South were answering the call for military duty for the Confederacy, enthusiastically enlisting in Southern regiments and returning home on leave in their smart-looking uniforms, Ben was unable to qualify for military duty because of his disability. He probably felt an acute sense of alienation as he saw his father and brother, Joseph, going off to serve in the cause of the Confederate States.
It appears that Benjamin Newman met his wife, Sarah Jane Knox, as a result of his employment by Sarah Jane’s step-father, David P. Holmes. The 1870 population Census record for Franklin County, Mississippi included B. S. Newman in the household of D. P. Holmes, indicating that he was working as a mechanic.
Approximately one month after the enumeration of the 1870 Census, Ben Newman and Sarah Jane Knox were married by Reverend S. Bufkin, M.G., minister at Union Baptist Church which is located near Whiteapple Village, a few miles north of the Knox home. Then about a year and a half later, two of Ben Newman’s sisters married Sarah Jones two surviving brothers: Ione Newman married “Ferd” J. Knox and Eudora Newman married Calvin H. Knox. Earlier, the 1860 population Census enumeration included Sarah Jane’s eldest brother, George W. Knox., who was killed in 1865 as a result of a wild turkey hunting accident.
According to the record of the Grand Commandery of the Knights Templar in Mississippi, Benjamin Solomon Newman had been initiated, passed and raised in the Concord Masonic Lodge #181 in Jefferson County during the year 1864. He allowed his membership to terminate in 1875, since the lodge was located in Jefferson County, and at that time he was apparently living at too great a distance to maintain his attendance.
Following their marriage in 1870, Benjamin and Sarah Jane (Knox) Newman probably continued to live in the home of David P. Holmes, Sarah Jane’s step-father, as a result of Ben Newman’s employment with Mr. Holmes. David P. Holmes and his wife, Mary, the mother of Sarah Jane, continued to live in Section 26, T5N, R1E of Franklin County, and it was part of the original land tract acquired by John N. Knox’s father, George Knox, about the year1815 - 1816. About the year 1861, David Holms sold the John N. Knox plantation to G. & E. Kennedy, and he then purchased about 232 acres of land in Section 9 of T5N, R1E from Mrs. Lucinda Kennedy. It appears that the family then moved to a house on this tract of land, about a mile northwest of the Knox home, and it was at this location that the family was enumerated in the Census of 1870. Ben Newman and his wife, Sarah Jane apparently lived here until the death of her mother, Mary, about the year 1875.
After the death of Mary (Lowery) Knox Holmes, it appears that Benjamin and Sarah Jane Newman then moved back to the home of Margaret Ann (Herring) Newman, his mother, whose home was located bordering Middle Fork Creek near the Jefferson County line. On the 15th of January 1878, Margaret Newman then deeded 150 acres of land in Section 5, T7N, R2E of Franklin County of her son, Benjamin Newman. This tract of land was part of her inheritance from her father, Aaron Herring. She had inherited this tract of land following the death of Aaron Herring on the 5th of April in 1874 and the subsequent settling of his estate in the probate court of Franklin County. Having been Part of Aaron Herring’s plantation, this tract of land was located near the head of Morgan’s Fork Creek and bordered the Jefferson County line, north of the village of Hamburg. The 1880 Population Census Record indicates that Ben and Sarah Newman had moved to their new tract of land and had established their own home.
At this new home, Benjamin Newman operated a small, self-sustaining livestock farm consisting mostly of a sizable herd of hogs, some cattle, and chickens. He also grew an annual vegetable garden near the house.
Benjamin Newman’s principle occupation, however, was that of carpentry, and he is known to have built a number of houses in the Franklin - Jefferson County area and some store buildings, including onces at Hamburg and McNair. He also built the two-storied house in which he and his family lived north of the village of Hamburg, and which was near the older home of his grandfather, Aaron Herring. Following the marriage of his eldest son, George P. Newman, Benjamin Newman and his son worked together to build a home for his son’s family. This home was located in or near Section 32, T8N, R1E of Jefferson County on the road which led from the Newman house to the village of McNair. Ben Newman was also skilled at making household furniture and kitchen utensils.
For a considerable time, Sarah Jane (Knox) Newman suffered from a skin cancer located on her cheek, and finally on the 22nd day of August 1896, she passed away after it had advanced considerably. Her burial in the New McNair Cemetery at the village of McNair in Jefferson County was among the earliest burials in that cemetery. Late in the night of August 12th 1903, Benjamin S. Newman passed away in his home with his children at his bedside. He was buried next to his wife in the cemetery at McNair, Jefferson County, Mississippi.

I am starting out the New Year 2012 with a wonderful addition to my family Genealogy collection. I was able to purchase this book today after trying for so long to own a copy. I checked out a copy twice from the Mississippi College library last year and spent many hours reading and studying it. After seeing my grandfather, John Valery Harrigill, and my GGG grandmother and many, many other family photos and the Newman family line; I had to own a copy to pass on to my granddaughter one day. What a great way to start my 2012 research...

I still remember that building

When I was a little girl growing up mygrandparents lived in Roxie, Mississippi located just 22.2 miles from Natchez. I can’t tellyou how many times we traveled that road. I was fascinated by onehugh building standing on the side of the road. It was like a big doll to meback then and it was a gas station at the time I first started noticing it.

Mammy's Cupboard was constructed around 1940 byHenry Gaude to attract customers to the Shell Filling Station that was inNatchez for many years. It was his wife who opened the truck stop fortravelers to eat. The building has housed a number of different businesses eversince.

It sits beside Highway 61 just north of Natchez,a Mississippi River town with a long and celebrated history. When you see it,the first the first thing you do is look again. Was that a 28 foot woman?
Today it still fascinates me; I guessthat why I saved this newspaper article that my Mother gave me one day. Isthere an unusual building or art on the side of the road that you stillremember as a child? She will always be the doll on the side of the road to me.

My mothers parents, Vida Louvenia Smith, Thomas and Louie Jackson Thomas were married on June 27, 1920. They celebrated their 50th Golden Wedding Anniversary in Jackson, Mississippi. That was 41 years ago .The Clarion Ledger, Jackson Daily Newspaper dated July 26, 1970 read as follows:

Mr. and Mrs. Louie Thomas of Jackson were recently honored on their Golden Wedding Anniversary with an open house. The hosts were Mrs. Eddie Payne of Biloxi, Jewell Thomas of Natchez, Mrs. Freddie Harrigill of Irving, Texas; Mrs. Myrtis Patrick, Mrs. Calvin Breeland, Mrs. Danny Meadows all of Jackson. Not present were Mrs. Any Anderson of California and SM/Sgt Marvin Thomas of Talpie Tarivan, China.
Greeting guests were the honorees and their children.
Dr. Frank L. Campbell officiated at the ceremony as the cuple repeated their wedding vows to complete their fiftieth anniversary.
The dining table was covered with Chantilly lace over yellow taffeta. The centerpiece was of yellow chrysanthemums, gladioli and spring flowers featuring the numbers 50. Silver candelabra completed the decorations for the table. The three layered wedding cake was topped with a gold trimmed ornament featuring the matured couple and the number 50. The cake and silver punch bowl were encircled with lilies.
Assisting at the reception were Mrs. Freddie Harrigill, Mrs. Eddie Payne, Mrs. Myrtis Patrick, Mrs. Kenneth Patrick, and Mrs. Calvin Breeland. Mrs. Danny Meadows greeted guests.
Mrs. Thomas was attired in a navy blue knit dress. Her corsage was a gold and yellow orchid. The couple were married in 1920 at Clark and have made their home in Jackson for the past 24 years.

I still remember that weekend. I was fifteen years old. My dad had called every relative and asked them if they could afford to hang a 50 dollar bill on a dollar tree for each person in their family. I raised that fifty dollars baby sitting. Now we were a Hugh family and that money tree was a lot of money and a great wedding surprise to my grandparents. I don't recall the full value at the end of the day, but I can remember the tree branches and how full it was with all those fifty's hanging on it. I can also remember how beautiful the cake was and helping in Granny's kitchen with her sister, Blanch, washing dishes. They did'nt use paper plates or cups. Everything was clear glass.

Granny and Granddad are both gone now and the years are passing by quickly. There were many photos taken that day and now whats left is the sweet memory of their
50th Wedding Anniversary.
