"Juliet Harrigill Campbell, something of her life & times" by her son, Perry (Pat) Duggins Campbell III: "Juliet was born into the dying days of Old South society with its ladies & gentlemen with their genteel ways. She is the last in any of our families, to Pat's knowledge, to have attended a finishing school where young ladies learned to speak French & conduct themselves in polite society.

Her earliest ancestor to arrive in the Natchez District of Spanish West Florida was Reverend Daniel Harrigill, a Baptist minister. In 1788, he and his family came from Tennessee down the Mississippi River and landed near modern-day Natchez on Cole Creek. He immedately began preaching in defiance of the Spanish governor's order against unauthorized worship services. From the capitol on Ile de Orleans, the governor sent orders that Rev Harrigill was to be arrested and brought in chains that he might be tried. Luckily, Rev Harrigill was one jump ahead of the soldiers and escaped upcountry. He returned to his church a few years later when the British occupied the Natchez District.
Juliet's mother, Lydia Newman Harrigill, is descended from Revolutionary War patriot, Jonathan Newman, who served under Francis Marion, The Swamp Fox, and participated in the Siege of Charleston. The Newman family left South Carolina and settled in Mississippi before it was a state."

Juliet was featured in a number of silent films: Uncle Toms Cabin, Baltimore Kid, and BACK Home in Maryland as well as a number of others.

  1. What site do you use to find all your information? I got a subscription to ancestry but don't find it all that great. I find the Mormon site much better.
